What I miss (and what I don't) living on our boat (even in a boatyard)

For Dave, by far the biggest thing I miss is showers (and the occasional bath). I knew this was going to be the case. At the moment, we have pretty much unlimited showers if we go to the clubhouse right next to us. But we don't want to be seen to be taking advantage of other members. So I tend to restrict myself to every other day (unless I've been grinding fiberglass, in which case I do always shower immediately afterwards to avoid building an allergic reaction and to avoid itching).

Jane misses the complete freedom to access anything in her huge sewing room at any time. Now she has to wait until we go to the storage container and then move lots of other stuff to reach the sewing tower.

The sewing tower

As for the best things. Jane loves being able to sit up in bed and look out at the view of the Menai Straits and Snowdonia. That is part of a much closer connection to nature, inevitable when living in a small space where you hear (and feel) the wind as well as the rain.

Dave is loving his nearly empty calendar, adapting each day to the weather and how multiple jobs are interacting with each other.

We have enough space.

We can have our own space when crafting or using the computer or reading (it does take a bit of manoeuvring around each other when we are trying to do boat jobs and film - especially if it is raining). The galley is working well. Compared to when we were just visiting (and kind of camping), we have expanded our menu to be much the same as when we lived in a house (fridge space is our key limitation at the moment). We used to take washing up home or take it to the clubhouse. Now we prefer to do it on the boat.

It will make a big difference when some of the jobs are finished, so tools and parts are not filling so much space. Then we can start using the forward heads (toilet) compartment (which will be much less disruptive if the other is asleep) and have our own showers (water permitting - but we are going to collect rainwater for that).

The other big thing is that we are taking a lot more time to go walking together. We are really enjoying connecting up the bits of the Anglesey Coastal path. This is where we have done so far:

Today (Wednesday) the rain cleared earlier than expected and was going to be clear(ish) for a few hours, so just before 3:30pm we drove for about 30 minutes to Malltraeth, and then walked 8.72km, just over 4km more coastal path done.

Despite the weather (and going for the walk) we also managed several jobs taking us forward.

  • Some video recording (getting to the "Battery Panic" episode) 😉
  • Sorting all the electrical parts and tools
  • Removing some wood trim from the wheelhouse that needs to be refurbished for the wheelhouse cover project
  • Checking the delivery of the clear PVC, fabric, zips, and fasteners for the wheelhouse cover
  • Some progress on the 12Volt DC wiring
  • Jane has been doing more detailed patterning, measurements and planning for the wheelhouse cover.
  • I've been doing some video editing (and writing this blog post) and also some upgrading on my computer.
