Preparing to move aboard

Acting now to avoid chaos for moving onboard day.

Preparing to move aboard

I'm very excited today because we've made significant progress towards moving onto the boat without feeling overwhelmed. We have just over 2 weeks to go before moving onboard day and this is probably our last visit before that fateful day. I have been worrying that it will be such a mess with so much extra stuff onboard that the depression caused will set us back weeks.

I got up keen to get stuck in and managed to organise the galley this morning. It is nowhere near finished as the space is provisional and limited, but we can now fit all the things we use most in an accessible manner. I used a device from IKEA (still not sponsored ;) but still our favourite furniture store) to separate the bowls etc. It's not strong enough to hold them at sea, but a good way to designate space and keep them separated. The food will have to go into plastic storage boxes and I worked out how many we can fit. We need to use boxes so that we can access things at the back without a pile of boxes and packets on the floor. I found that the pressure cooker, large frying pan and smaller pan will fit on the bottom shelf. The wine cupboard is still available, so that's ok 😄 I feel better about using the space daily, although we can't fit all our dried pulses etc in yet. We hope to create storage for them in part of the saloon... Quite a lot of items are going home to be given away as we don't feel they are useful for life at sea eg mugs, small pyrex dish, smallest saucepan.

Next after a third cup of tea, I tackled the shelves in the corridor. These were piled high with muddled items from original mast parts to a bilge pump and electrical items. Many things had been added randomly to boxes when tired and clearing up after the day's work.
I organised this mess into three piles: stuff to go to the storage, stuff to move elsewhere and stuff to leave in place. Now we have the top shelf for our clothes bags and the lower one holds stuff we expect to use soon.

The car is now quite full with things for the store, but we (I?) feel that unless there is space, we will not get any work done while we are staying here.

Biggest win of the day: Not as much cleaning needed as I expected. A quick vac and a few things to wipe was all it took.
Bonus win: Dave fitted the mesh hammock I've made to store things over my side of the bed. Now I can put my glasses and crossword there and not worry about rolling onto them in the night! He might even get more space in bed.
