We are back in Fishguard
5 hours to get nowhere 😀
We were a bit delayed starting this passage to Dale, leaving at 6pm instead of 4pm. The main reason was that the Yankee halyard came undone, so Jane had to pull Dave up the mast to fetch it. The delay meant the wind dropped a lot.
Everything went really well as we left. The anchor came up, with the mainsail already up. Within a few seconds I was confident about turning to miss the inner breakwater, so I turned the motor off.
Basically, we sailed straight out from Fishguard for 2.5 hours and then tacked, but due to the tide sweeping us to the East we were steering 210° but achieving 150°. That means we just retraced our steps. We just couldn't make progress due to the dying breeze, the tide against us, and quite a large swell from ahead. So we snuck back to where we were before, we motor sailed the last couple of miles (but batteries are still 97% full.
No damage to anything but my ego 🤣
We will make new plans tomorrow.
